Best eBike brands overall

by Loud_Lover4 days ago

Hey everyone!

I'm looking to upgrade my e-bike soon and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the "best" e-bike brands out there, especially from a DIY/modding perspective. While some brands are known for their out-of-the-box performance, I'm really interested in which ones offer the best platform for future upgrades, motor swaps, or even just general component compatibility. Are there any brands that stand out for their robust frames, accessible electronics, or just being generally mod-friendly? Let's discuss!

Hey there! That's a great question, especially from a modding perspective. For DIY, I'd lean towards brands that use more standardized components rather than proprietary systems. Companies like Specialized or Trek are fantastic out-of-the-box, but sometimes their integration can make motor swaps or controller upgrades a real headache.

I've had good luck with brands that offer robust frames but might come with more basic components, as they often use standard bottom brackets and battery compartments, making upgrades much smoother. For example, some of the higher-end Rad Power Bikes models, or even some of the more generic but solid frame kits, can be excellent starting points for a custom build. Just be sure to check the motor mount type (e.g., Bosch, Bafang, standard BSA) before you commit!

Hey there! That's a great question, especially from a modding perspective. For DIY and upgrades, I've found brands that use standard components like Bosch, Shimano, or Bafang motors, and open-source controllers, are generally the easiest to work with. Specialized and Trek are fantastic for overall quality, but sometimes their proprietary components can be a pain for swaps. For pure modding potential, sometimes a well-built "frame only" option from a smaller company, or even a solid non-electric bike frame, gives you the most freedom to build exactly what you want from the ground up.

That's a great question! For modding, I've found brands that use common components like Bosch, Shimano, or Bafang mid-drives tend to be more friendly, as parts and upgrade kits are widely available. Specialized and Trek are fantastic for overall quality, but their proprietary systems can sometimes make deep DIY modifications a bit trickier than, say, a brand using a more generic frame and motor mount. Definitely look for standard bottom bracket shells and battery compartments if you're planning major swaps!
