New to eBikes - where to start?

by JessicaBikes42about 6 hours ago

Hey everyone!

Just joined the forum and super excited to dive into the eBike world. I'm looking to build my first eBike, probably converting a hardtail mountain bike I already own, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the options out there. For those of you who've done a DIY conversion, what's the absolute first thing I should be researching or considering before buying any parts? Any common pitfalls to avoid for a newbie?

Hey there! Welcome to the eBike world, it's a blast!

That's awesome you're looking to convert your hardtail. Before buying anything, I'd strongly recommend checking your bike's bottom bracket shell width and diameter, and also the rear dropout spacing (usually 135mm for QR, 142/148mm for thru-axle). This is crucial for choosing a compatible motor kit (especially mid-drives) and rear wheel hub motor. A common pitfall for newbies is ordering a kit only to find it doesn't physically fit their frame! Good luck, and feel free to ask more as you go!
