New to eBikes - where to start?

by Reaction Test User1 day ago

Hey everyone!

Just joined the forum and I'm super stoked to finally dive into the world of eMTBs. I've been riding traditional mountain bikes for years, mostly singletrack and some technical climbs, but my knees aren't what they used to be, and I'm looking to extend my rides and explore more challenging terrain. For those of you who've made the leap, what's the single most important piece of advice you'd give to someone just starting out with an e-mountain bike? Should I focus on motor type, battery range, or suspension travel first? Any tips on getting used to the extra weight and power on trails would be awesome too!

Welcome to the eMTB world! It's an absolute game-changer, especially for extending those rides and tackling climbs with a bit more ease. For someone coming from traditional MTB, I'd say the single most important thing is to prioritize motor feel and battery range over suspension travel initially. A smoother, more natural motor (like a Bosch CX or Shimano EP8) will feel less jarring with the extra weight, and good range means you won't be cutting those longer rides short. Definitely start in Eco mode to get used to the weight and power delivery before cranking it up – it's a different beast in the corners!

Welcome to the eMTB world! It's an awesome leap, especially for keeping those knees happy and extending your adventures. For me, the single most important thing is getting the right fit and suspension setup for your riding style, just like with a traditional MTB, but perhaps even more crucial with the added weight. Don't overlook the importance of sag and rebound settings; they make a huge difference in how the bike handles the extra power and weight on technical singletrack. As for getting used to it, start with a lower assist mode than you think you need – it helps you adapt to the power delivery more smoothly!
