New to eBikes - where to start?

Hey everyone!

Just joined the forum and I'm super excited to dive into the eBike world. I've been riding traditional bikes for years, mostly commuting and some light trail riding (think hybrid bikes), and I'm really keen on building my own eBike rather than buying off the shelf. My main goal is a commuter that can handle a 15-20 mile round trip daily with some hills, maybe even a bit of light gravel.

So, for those of you who've done DIY conversions or built from scratch, where's the best place to start researching kits, motors, and batteries without getting totally overwhelmed? Are there any specific types of motors (hub vs. mid-drive) that are better for a first-time DIY builder on a budget, especially considering my commute? Any advice on what to prioritize or common pitfalls to avoid would be awesome!
