New to eBikes - where to start?

by EmilyWatson4 days ago

Hey everyone!

Just joined the forum – super excited to dive into the eBike world! I've been eyeing them for a while, mostly for commuting a hilly 10-mile round trip and some weekend trail rides, nothing too extreme. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options out there, from hub motors to mid-drives, and different battery sizes. For those of you who've been through this, what was your absolute first step or the most important thing you considered when you were new and looking to buy? Any specific bike types or features you'd recommend starting with for a versatile ride?

Welcome to the eBike world, you're going to love it! For your hilly 10-mile commute and weekend trail rides, I'd strongly lean towards a mid-drive motor. They handle hills much better and feel more like a traditional bike, which is great for trails. My first step was always defining my primary use case, and yours sounds like a perfect fit for a versatile hardtail eMTB or a robust commuter with good suspension. Don't stress too much about battery size initially; most 500Wh batteries will easily cover your 10-mile round trip with plenty to spare.
