Most eBikes arrive from the factory in their simplest form — no fenders, no rack, no lights beyond the basics. Adding the right accessories transforms a capable machine into a genuinely practical everyday vehicle. A rear rack turns your eBike into a cargo hauler. Fenders keep you and your drivetrain clean in wet conditions. Proper lights keep you visible and legal. A quality lock protects your investment.
This guide covers the installation and adjustment of the four most impactful eBike accessories: fenders, rear racks, lighting, and security. Each section addresses the eBike-specific considerations that standard bicycle guides miss — battery clearance, hub motor hardware, torque arm interference, and the extra weight that affects rack selection.
Part 1: Fenders
Why eBikes Need Fenders More Than Regular Bikes
An eBike's motor, battery, and electrical connectors are all vulnerable to water and grit. A rear tire without a fender throws a continuous rooster tail of water and debris directly at the battery pack, motor connector, and rider. Fenders protect these expensive components and dramatically extend their lifespan [1].
Choosing the Right Fender Type
Full-length fenders are the best choice for commuting and all-weather riding. They bolt to the frame at multiple points and provide coverage from the front of the tire to the rear. They require frame eyelets (threaded mounting points) and take more time to install, but they stay in place, do not rattle, and provide superior protection [1].
Clip-on or SKS-style fenders attach to the fork crown and seatstay without eyelets. They are faster to install and work on frames without dedicated mounting points, but they are less stable at high speeds and provide less coverage.
Compatibility check: Before purchasing fenders, verify that your eBike frame has mounting eyelets. Many performance-oriented eBikes and some fat-tire models omit them. Also check tire clearance — the fender must have at least 5–10mm of clearance around the tire to avoid rubbing [1].
Installing Full-Length Fenders: Step-by-Step
Tools needed: 4mm and 5mm hex wrenches, 10mm wrench (for some fork bolts), needle-nose pliers.
Front Fender Installation:
- Power off the eBike and remove the battery if it is located near the front fork.
- Remove the front wheel. On hub-drive eBikes, disconnect the motor cable before removing the wheel.
- Locate the fender mounting bracket — the U-shaped metal bracket at the front of the fender. Position the fender behind the brake arch so the bracket aligns with the fork crown mounting point [1].
- Thread the mounting bolt through the headlight (if integrated), one washer, and the U-shaped bracket, then into the fork crown mounting point. Install the rear washer and locknut. Do not fully tighten yet.
- Attach the fender stays (the long metal arms) to the fork eyelets on both sides using the longer bolts. Use a 4mm hex wrench. Again, do not fully tighten.
- With all bolts loose, center the fender over the tire and verify clearance on both sides. Tighten all bolts once alignment is confirmed.
- Reinstall the wheel and reconnect any motor cables.
Rear Fender Installation:
- Shift to the smallest rear cog (highest gear number) to give the chain maximum slack.
- Remove the rear wheel. On hub-motor eBikes, note the torque arm position and motor cable routing before removal.
- Position the fender over the rear tire, aligning the mounting bracket with the chainstay arch mounting point. Attach with a small bolt through a washer [1].
- Attach the fender at the seatstay arch using another small bolt and washer.
- Verify clearance around the tire on both sides. On fat-tire eBikes, clearance can be tight — confirm at least 5mm on each side.
- Reinstall the rear wheel, ensuring the torque arm is correctly seated on hub-motor bikes.
Part 2: Rear Racks
Why Rack Selection Matters More on eBikes
Choosing a rear rack for an eBike is more complex than for a regular bicycle. The battery may occupy space where a rack's upper struts would normally sit. Hub motor hardware — torque arms, axle nuts, and motor cables — can block lower mounting points. Disc brake calipers can interfere with rack stays. Frame-mounted racks bolt to dedicated eyelets on the seat stays and dropout area. This is the strongest and most stable option for eBikes. The load path goes directly into the frame structure [2].

- Test by pressing down firmly on the rack platform and checking for any movement. A properly installed rack should feel completely rigid.
Part 3: Lighting
Legal Requirements
In the United States, most states require a white front light visible from 500 feet and a red rear reflector or light visible from 300 feet for night riding. Many states additionally require a rear red light. Check your state's specific requirements before riding after dark.
Choosing Lights for an eBike
eBike lights fall into two categories:
USB-rechargeable lights are the most common aftermarket option. They are easy to install (typically a simple handlebar or seatpost clamp) and do not require wiring into the eBike's electrical system. Look for a minimum of 400 lumens for the front light for urban riding; 800+ lumens for rural or trail riding.
Integrated lights wire directly into the eBike's battery system and are powered by the main battery. These are more convenient (no separate charging) but require basic electrical knowledge to install on eBikes that did not come with them from the factory.
Installing a USB-Rechargeable Front Light
- Select a mounting position on the handlebar — typically center or slightly off-center to avoid the display or bell.
- Slide the mounting clamp onto the handlebar. Most lights use a rubber-lined clamp secured with a single bolt.
- Tighten the clamp bolt until the light is secure but can still be rotated to aim. Typical torque is 2–3 Nm.
- Aim the light beam slightly downward — approximately 10–15 degrees below horizontal. A light aimed too high blinds oncoming riders and drivers.
- Tighten the clamp fully.
Installing a Rear Light
Rear lights typically mount to the seatpost or seatstay. Seatpost mounting is most common:
- Slide the mounting bracket onto the seatpost at a height that keeps the light visible but does not conflict with the saddle or rack.
- Tighten the mounting bolt until secure.
- Verify the light is visible from directly behind the bike and is not blocked by the saddle, rack, or panniers.
Part 4: Phone Mounts
A phone mount is one of the most practical eBike accessories — it keeps navigation visible, allows you to monitor the eBike app, and keeps the phone accessible without removing it from a pocket.
Choosing a Phone Mount
The key factors for eBike use are vibration resistance and security. eBike motors and rough roads create significant vibration that can damage phone cameras and loosen poorly designed mounts. Look for mounts with vibration dampening (rubber inserts) and a positive locking mechanism [3].
Recommended mount types for eBikes:
- Quad Lock and Peak Design style mounts use a twist-lock mechanism that is highly secure and vibration-resistant.
- RAM Mount systems are extremely robust and used by motorcycle riders — overkill for most eBikes but excellent for rough terrain.
- Avoid basic rubber band-style mounts — they do not hold securely at eBike speeds and vibration levels.
Installation
- Select a handlebar position that keeps the phone screen visible without blocking the display or controls.

- Tighten the clamp bolt to the specified torque (typically 3–4 Nm). Do not overtighten — this can crack the handlebar clamp.
- Test by pushing the phone firmly in all directions. There should be no movement.
Part 5: Locks
eBike-Specific Security Considerations
eBikes are significantly more valuable than standard bicycles and are targeted more frequently by thieves. A $30 cable lock is not adequate security for a $2,000–$5,000 eBike. Invest in security proportional to the bike's value.

Where to Lock
Always lock through the frame and at least one wheel to a fixed, immovable object. Locking only through a wheel allows the thief to remove the wheel and take the rest of the bike. On eBikes with quick-release wheels, consider locking both wheels.
